All about Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a profession that helps with pain or movement that comes from an injury to: muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves.

Physiotherapists are experts in diagnosis and treatment, and also play a major role in rehabilitating people after and injury or operation.

Why Physio?

Physiotherapists are reliable and regulated under government bodies to ensure that each physiotherapist is full qualified to provide high quality service.

The Victorian Board of physiotherapy handles the registration of physiotherapists, and the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) also helps physiotherapists in their continuing education, and updates them in the latest of research and techniques.

Physiotherapists also work closely with medical practitioners, to follow the current medical model for treating patients. Physiotherapists are recognised for their training, and can be found working as part of the allied health team in hospitals, they also work as a team with doctor and specialists in major sporting clubs and events.

Research in Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is active in constantly researching current techniques, as well as exploring new techniques and regimes to treat injuries.

The profession works with treatments that have clinical evidence support. This does not mean when a treatment has been successful with one or two people, it means that a research project has been carried out by a university with significant sample of participants.

Australian Physiotherapy research and training is highly regarded by physiotherapists worldwide.

This clinic has provided and still is providing services in treating people under research studies run by Melbourne University.

Paediatric Physiotherapy

Our paediatric physiotherapist Margaret Charlton has expertise and training to treat babies through to adolescents, providing thorough assessment and development of an individual proramme to suit your child’s needs.  We believe in family centred practice and place great importance and value on the opinions and needs of the whole family.  If required they will work also in partnership with your school or other health professionals to meet your child’s needs.

We believe that education is also a key to helping recovery. Firstly we will involve you in managing and assisting your child’s development and injuries by advising ways of handling and playing with your child.  In some cases we can also give advice on equipment to help function and healing.  You will also be assisted in understanding the condition your child is experiencing, and how to assist them in everyday tasks, sports and other activities.

How can Physiotherapy help?

Sports injuries

Whether it is a sprained ankle at your netball game, or a dislocated shoulder from football, or a twisted knee at basketball, or even a bit of a tennis elbow. Our Physiotherapists can provide you with assessment and treatment of any injury to get you back to sports.

We have regular referrals from orthopaedic surgeons, and have the capacity and skills to provide rehabilitation after an injury. If your injury is more severe and needs scans or further orthopaedic assessment, we can also help to arrange it.

Physiotherapists are skilled at analysing movement, and can also help you taping, or bracing needs to ensure a safe return or even a safe start into an exercise program.

At Home

Lets face it, accidents do happen around the home whether we like it or not. We can help you in two ways: by the information sheets on injury prevention available at our practice, or from our website, or by actively treating an injury that has already occured.

Care must always be taken at home and in the garden when lifting heavy objects, like buckets or water. Care also needs to be taken when vacuuming at home, sitting for long periods of time, or even mowing the lawn.

In the unfortunate event that you do get hurt at home, our physiotherapists can help with treatment, prevention, and also recommendation of products to help you recover quicker.

At Work

The Blackburn North Physiotherapy Centre is also available if any injury should occur in the workplace.

Whether you are going through work cover or not, we can provide you with treatment and exercises at the earliest time, so you are able to return to work quicker.

We also stock a wide range of back supports and supportive braces to ensure that returning to work is as easy as possible.

So whether it is an injury from heavy lifting, a repetitive strain injury from too much typing, or even stiff neck and shoulders from working too long at the computer. We are able to help you.
